What is Video Game Addiction?

The famous novelist Mark Twain once said that ‘too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.’ First things first, don’t get too much excited if you think that this article is about whiskey. Unfortunately, this article will talk about video game addiction.

Video game addiction is defined as too much or excessive playing of video games. Video game excessiveness may be detected when a person’s everyday work or activity is disrupted by playing video games. It is an obsession about video games where a person would rather choose playing the game for the whole day rather than doing other productive things. Well, there may be persons who can still do other things but addiction will show if even in doing other things, the gamer would rather talk about the video game he or she is playing or would instantaneously finish the work being done to play video games again. To put it bluntly, there seems to be an empty satisfaction on the part of the addicted video gamer. This is just one among the negative effects of video games: neglecting other things.

Is video game addiction really bad for it to have more than one negative effect? Yes it is. Just like what the quote stated earlier said, too much of anything can be bad. Just like too much of drinking, smoking or eating fatty food that will cause danger to our health, video game addiction may also endanger our health. While playing video games for a long period of time, our eyes are also exposed to the game console screen for a long time. This excessive use of the eyes in playing video games may cause eyestrain. Eyestrain is not permanent but it causes irritation to a person. It also makes the eyes tired where a person must put it to rest before using again.

Another problem that video game addiction may do is loss of appetite which may lead to a lot of illnesses. Video game addicts tend to neglect the usual schedule for eating. They would rather play than eat. There are also times when the video game addicts eat chips and soda for a whole day rather than healthy food. This is a very unhealthy way of eating and may lead to body disorders in the long run.

Video games are cool and flashy. It’s better to play video games that doing bad things such as using drugs or committing a crime. However, too much video games is also bad because it may cause negative effects not only to the person playing video games but also to other persons around him. So for gamers out there, control your game time!

Video Games and Violence

One of the most played video game classification is the one that contains combat and fighting. This type of video game is played by most gamers including children. The main element of these games that entice the children to play this game is that they have the freedom to fight anybody and be violent as they want to. Players get to kill enemy soldiers, monsters, zombies, policemen, or even plain bystanders. This being said, there is a clamor from the parents that their kids are being affected by the violence that these types of video games are showing. Is this really true?

This issue has been a hot topic of debates in the internet and in different forums and websites around the world. Netizens (citizens of the internet) claim that video game violence teach children to be hurt others without any reason at all. On the other hand, there are netizens that consider this idea to be absurd and say that violence in the real world is not in any way related to violence in video games. They claim that violence depends on the morals of a person committing it and not on the game that he or she plays.

To settle this debate, a lot of studies have been conducted to show if indeed there is a connection about video game violence and the violent actuations of children. Since 1984, there have been a lot different results for this topic.  However, most studies in the 1990s to 2013 conducted by students in different universities in the US such as University of Columbia and Purdue conclude that a person’s aggression may be attributed to video game violence. However, a recent long-term study conducted by psychologist Christopher J. Ferguson concluded that violence is not a result of violence in video games. This study was published in the Journal of Communication in 2014.

In the end, this issue remains to be finally unanswered as there are varying conclusions in the studies. Only one thing is certain in this issue. No matter how violent a video game is, gamers will still continue to play it because it is what interests them.

Sports Video Game Genre: Helpful to Real-life Athletes

One of the genres of video games is sports games. It is the type of games that are also considered as sports in the real life. It stretches from the mental game of chess up to physical team games such as basketball and football. It is a game that allows the player to do real-life game moves as well as play with their favorite athletes or teams.

Sports games nowadays are produced mainly by two big gaming companies: EA Sports and 2K Sports. Moreover, these video game developers produce new game versions every year that is based on the stats, happenings, and highlights of the year preceding the game introduction. The games also contain features and new real-life players so that it will not be a boring repetition of the previous games. And these game versions are one of the most-sought games in the video gaming community.

These types of games are considered to be very helpful to real-life athletes. This game is a venue for real-life athletes to learn new moves to try on their own. This is because the in-game athletes in sports video games may give ideas to real-life athletes on how to perform new moves. The sports video games are usually packed with the moves of the in-game athletes in real life. The athletes playing these games may learn this by watching them.

However, a question then comes in: Why would a video game be used if athletes may watch the actual footage of movies using saved videos? Well, it really depends on the athlete and the coach managing the former. However, for me, using video games under the sports genre is a better method in helping athletes train than using actual footages because it is a venue for athletes to have fun and learn actual tricks and moves that they will use in their game in the real life. This is an entertaining venue for athletes to train, learn and play at the same time.
